API keys

Every call to the scores API needs a key. Send it in the Authorization header:

Create a key

  1. In the console, under API keys, choose Create key.
  2. Give it a name that says where it’s used, such as “Research notebook”.
  3. Copy the key. We show it once.
We store only a hash of each key, so we can’t show it again. If you lose a key, create a new one and delete the old one. The list shows each key’s name, its first few characters, when it was created and when it was last used. It never shows the full key.

Keep your keys safe

  • Keep keys on your own machine or server. Never put a key in a web page, a mobile app or code you share. Anyone with the key can use your plan.
  • Read keys from an environment variable or a secret manager. Never commit a key to a code repository. Our examples read it from FORWARD_MODEL_API_KEY.
  • Use one key per app. Then you can delete one without stopping the others.

If a key leaks

Delete it in the console straight away and create a new one. Calls with a deleted key get a key_revoked error. Tell us at support@forwardmodel.ai if you think it was used.

The connector

Claude and ChatGPT don’t use API keys. You sign in with your Forward Model account when you connect, and the assistant calls on your behalf. See Claude and ChatGPT.
